About This Site

Vegetable Gardening Hub publishes first-person reviews, comparisons and how-to guides on the gear a backyard vegetable garden actually runs on: raised beds, drip irrigation, organic plant food, hand tools and garden kneelers. Everything here is written from one working garden in the North Carolina Piedmont.

Garden Safety

Hand tools with sharp or serrated edges, including hori hori knives, can cause serious cuts. Keep them sheathed when not in use, cut away from your body, and store them out of reach of children.

Before digging deep in a yard, call 811 so buried utility lines can be marked. Organic fertilizers can attract pets and wildlife, so store them sealed, keep them away from children and animals, and follow the label. Wash vegetables and your hands after handling soil or fertilizer, and wear gloves if you have cuts.

Filled raised beds are heavy. Check the weight rating, place them on level, solid ground, and get help lifting. Garden kneelers and seats should be used on firm, level ground, and anyone with a knee, back or balance condition should talk to a doctor before heavy garden work. Heat is a real risk in summer: work early, drink water and take breaks. Nothing here is medical advice.
